Although the movie has some regressive aspects such as pitting women against each other and explicitly making beauty a prerequisite for heroism, I’m willing to forgive it. Despite the sleazy schoolgirl uniforms, the characters are largely non-sexualized. are competent fighters and they represent the range of femininity. Did I mention the part where they report directly to a completely unrelated black man and the academy is headed by a woman? While this is not progressive, it is deeply amusing considering the frequency with which white actors are cast as Asian characters. The result has to be heard to be believed.
Dominique speaks with a heavy French accent, despite the fact that Aoki herself has a prominent Japanese accent. Although Dominique is supposed to be French, she is portrayed by Japanese-American actress Devon Aoki. On at least one occasion, Amy disregards her instructions and puts the team in danger because of it. Not only is there a black girl on the team (Max), she is the team leader.

The tacky fetishism of lesbian women is even commented on in the movie when Amy’s ex-boyfriend tries to get back together with her because he likes girl on girl. There are awkward and unsexy moments that make this romance relatable to people of all sexualities. By contrast, Amy and Lucy have a caring and un-eroticized relationship that works for them first and foremost. Lesbianism in popular culture is frequently portrayed as something straight women engage in for the men around them, particularly men in the audience. portrays Amy and Lucy’s relationship in other progressive ways. On top of that incredibly low bar, D.E.B.S. is one of the depressingly few films with a lesbian protagonist who doesn’t die by the end. To address the elephant in the room, D.E.B.S. Any relationship that starts like this is best kept on the DL. What unfolds is an awkward romance both women must keep secret. A close encounter between the two leaves Amy questioning her sexuality and Lucy questioning her life of crime.
